• Sommario/riassunto: Die in vorliegendem Band versammelten Forschungsbeiträge erkunden die vielfältigen Kulturwirkungen der Reformation in den städtischen Zentren am mare balticum und leisten wichtige Beiträge zur komparatistischen Metropolenforschung, zur historischen Kulturtransferforschung, zur Mediengeschichte des reformatorischen Erbes und zur Rekonfiguration der Reformationstheorie des Ostseeraums. In den Blick genommen werden diejenigen Städte im Ostseeraum, die aufgrund ihrer politischen, ökonomischen und geistig-kulturellen Relevanz im Laufe des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts Metropolfunktionen besaßen bzw. zunehmend erlangten. Gefragt wird nach den Faktoren, die diese Metropolenbildungen begünstigten, den Formen und Wegen kultureller Transfers im Ostseeraum - und dies jeweils vor dem Hintergrund der heterogenen Wirkungen, welche die Reformation rund um die Ostsee in den städtischen Kulturen zeitigte. • Sommario/riassunto: The realities of Jewish life in eastern Europe that concerned the average Jew meant the way their children grew up, the way they studied, how they married, and all the subsequent stages of the life cycle. The family and the community were the core institutions of east European Jewish society. These realities were always dynamic and evolving but in the 19th century, the pace of change in almost every area of life was exceptionally rapid. This text deals with these social realities. The result is a picture that is far from the stereotyped view of the past that is common today, but a more honest and more comprehensive one. Topics covered consider the learning experiences of both males and females of different ages. They also deal with and distinguish between study among the well off and learned and study among the poorer masses.

• Sommario/riassunto: Professions are central to any political sociology of major associations, organizations and venues in civil society underpinning democracy; they are not a subset of livelihoods in a mundane sociology of work and occupations. Professions in Civil Society and the State is at once elegant ; and startling in its directness and the sheer scope of its implications for future comparative research and theory. Not since Talcott Parsons during the early 1970's has any sociologist (or political scientist) pursued this line of inquiry. Sciulli’s theoretical approach differs fundamentally from Parsons’ and rests on a breadth of historical and cross-national support that always eluded him. The sociology of professions has come full circle, leaving behind Parsons, his critics, and two generations of received wisdom.
