À partir de plusieurs angles d'analyses, cet ouvrage aborde l'étude des crises brutales de mortalité du passé liées à des épidémies. Le premier concerne la démonstration archéologique d'une crise de mortalité (simultanéité des dépôts). Un autre axe de recherche est l'analyse des ossements en laboratoire qui peut nous éclairer sur la nature des décès : caractéristiques démographiques de l'échantillon exhumé (population sélectionnée) et analyses en biologie moléculaire (détermination de certains pathogènes à l'origine de crises épidémiques). Pour les temps historiques et surtout les plus récents, la compréhension de ces crises va imposer un recours systématique aux données d'archives (travaux en démographies historique, recherche du statut des lieux, investigations de terrain en amont de la fouille).  Ce recueil de volets méthodologiques, d'analyses de sites et de synthèses montre la dépendance étroite des recherches historiques et archéologiques, compléments essentiels des études paléobiologiques ; enrichi par une ouverture vers la sociologie de la mort il prouve la nécessité de développer une stratégie de recherche interdisciplinaire dont l'objectif est d'accéder à une meilleure compréhension des crises de mortalité ancienne.
