Between 1918 and 1921 an estimated 100,000 Jewish people were killed, maimed or tortured in pogroms in Ukraine. Hundreds of Jewish communities were burned to the ground and hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless and destitute, including orphaned children. A number of groups were responsible for these brutal attacks, including the Volunteer Army, a faction of the Russian White Army. The Pogroms in Ukraine, 1918-19 is a vivid and horrifying account of the atrocities committed by the Volunteer Army, written by Nokhem Shtif, an eminent Yiddish linguist and social activist who joined the relief efforts on behalf of the pogrom survivors in Kiev. Sous ce titre évocateur le lecteur trouvera des articles de chercheurs de l’institut Pierre Renouvin consacrés à l’unité et à l’identité européennes au XXe siècle. Des pistes de réflexion ont été ouvertes, des relectures ont été faites par des historiens à môme de développer des problématiques nouvelles parce qu’ils ont eu accès à des archives neuves. Il faut donc souligner l’apport conceptuel et documentaire de ces travaux. Les questions abordées concernent la géographie de l’Europe, un continent sur les atlas, en fait une série de compartiments ; l’Europe est diverse. Elles font apparaître une certaine pratique culturelle commune qui, universalisme oblige, prétend s’étendre au monde. L’Europe c’est l’arbitrage, la paix par le droit. L’unité économique a fait les débuts de l’Europe, mais peut-elle conforter le patriotisme européen ? Dans cette histoire tumultueuse les autres interviennent, l’Europe veut-elle être encore indépendante ? Il ne peut y avoir d’histoire de l’unité européenne sans trois grands États : la Grande-Bretagne, l’Allemagne et la France. L’avenir de l’Europe dépend de la réponse qu’ils donnent à cette question simple : construire l’Europe est-il de leur intérêt ? Les grands fondateurs de l’Europe sont évidemment mis en scène, de Monnet à de Gaulle en passant par Briand. Ce livre n’est pas un programme pour l’Europe de demain ; il est davantage ; il présente à la lumière de l’histoire, les vrais défis à relever pour que l’Europe continue d’exister. |
