Aux confins de la Gascogne, du Toulousain et du Quercy, dans une solitude boisée, se développe au début du xiies. l’ermitage de Grandselve que le voyage de saint Bernard entraîna dans l’aventure cistercienne. L’abbaye accumule terres et domaines et rapidement sa fortune foncière n’eut d’égale que sa richesse immobilière. Discrète dans sa présence au monde, si l’on met à part la personnalité majeure d’Arnaud Amaury dans la conduite de la croisade contre les Albigeois, ou la fondation de l’université de Toulouse, elle édifie un système complexe de granges aux activités complémentaires. Les paysages s’en trouvent fortement modifiés. Confortait-elle le mythe du moine défricheur, harmonisant ses activités entre la clôture et la charrue ? Il faut y regarder de beaucoup plus près. Nous la retrouvons singulièrement adaptée aux usages de son temps, dotée de rentes et de revenus les plus divers, construisant un intense réseau de relations économiques, de l’Atlantique à la Méditerranée, du Massif Central à l’Aragon, à la tête d’une puissante seigneurie banale.
