Cet ouvrage propose de redécouvrir l'œuvre historique des frères Goncourt, qu'elle touche à la féminité, au théâtre, à la peinture : objets, méthodes et style, chez eux, se voulaient différents des normes de l'écriture et du goût de leur époque. Mais au programme de ce volume figure aussi la présence silencieuse, mais d'autant plus entêtante, de l'histoire, à l'horizon plutôt qu'à l'arrière-plan de leurs romans. Par les généalogies et les récits des origines qui donnent corps à leurs personnages, le xviiie siècle des Goncourt romanciers dialogue avec celui des Goncourt esthètes et collectionneurs. Entre un présent dédaigné mais archivé dans le Journal ou bien mis en fiction, et un passé prérévolutionnaire rêvé et réinventé, les Goncourt s'affrontent pleinement à la question de l'historicité et du temps. |
