Die Entwicklungen dieser „Sattelzeit“ werden in diesem Buch aus einem besonderen Blickwinkel betrachtet, aus der Perspektive einer Peripherie, eines Alpentals. Im Fokus steht dabei eine Person: Michael Pfurtscheller. Am Gerüst seiner Biografie wird – auf einer Fülle von Quellen basierend – die Geschichte einer ländlichen Gesellschaft an der Schwelle zur Moderne montiert.
