À l’occasion de la première grande opération d’archéologie préventive réalisée dans les Antilles françaises sur les cultures amérindiennes insulaires, deux gisements préservés de façon exceptionnelle étaient découverts sur l’arrière-plage de Baie Orientale dans l’île de Saint-Martin. Les campements du Mésoindien (800 av. J.-C.-100 ap. J.-C.) associent activités de subsistance et fabrication d’outils sur pierre, coquille ou corail, ce qui est sans précédent pour la période précéramique ; un atelier de production de lames sur coquille, des dépôts d’objets et un outillage lithique spécifique y apparaissent comme les indices d’une protoagriculture et d’une présédentarisation.



L’occupation du Néoindien récent (740-960 ap.J.-C.) quant à elle, est un simple dépotoir interprété comme un campement spécialisé, satellite du village de Pointe du Canonnier, selon un schéma d’occupation du territoire caractéristique de cette période.  L’étude que nous en propose Dominique Bonnissent, à la fois novatrice et originale, est le résultat d’un long travail d’équipe. Elle nous permet d’accéder au mode de vie finalement complexe des populations précéramiques nomades qui ont sillonné la mer Caraïbe. Des séries de mobiliers inédites, analysées, dessinées et photographiées par des spécialistes, constituent un référentiel en matière de typochronologie et de technologie. Cet ouvrage est une ressource désormais incontournable pour l’archéologie précolombienne caribéenne.
