|
Le sort d'une métropole se joue en partie dans ses relations avec l'extérieur. Telle est l'idée que met à l'épreuve cet ouvrage. En une douzaine de contributions, on se propose de montrer comment, aux époques médiévale et moderne, la ville de Lyon fut aussi construite dans l'échange avec des villes qui étaient tout à la fois ses partenaires, ses concurrentes et le miroir de ses propres mutations. De multiples acteurs hommes d'Église et gens du roi, marchands et financiers, peintres et poètes de passage, chroniqueurs éloignés dans l'espace et dans le temps ont façonné la ville et son image. Les matériaux variés qui permettent d'en rendre compte proviennent souvent d'archives de villes ayant entretenu des relations étroites avec Lyon : la correspondance des marchands d'Augsbourg et de Nuremberg, les livres de compte de la compagnie florentine Salviati retrouvés à Pise, les documents du Castillan Simón Ruíz conservés à Valladolid. Les bibliothèques et les musées d'Europe livrent aussi des témoignages littéraires et iconographiques qui restituent fût-ce de façon partielle une autre image de Lyon. L'enquête n'oublie pas le regard des Grenoblois, contrariés parfois par leur puissante voisine ! L'autocélébration, en tout cas, est d'autant moins de mise dans tous ces documents que les points de vue externes sur l'histoire de Lyon ont été privilégiés par des auteurs venus d'horizons très variés. This collection of studies by anthropologists, botanists, ecologists, and biologists is an important contribution to the emerging field of historical ecology. The book combines cutting-edge research with new perspectives to emphasize the close relationship between humans and their natural environment. Contributors examine how alterations in the natural world mirror human cultures, societies, and languages. Treating the landscape like a text, these researchers decipher patterns and meaning in the Ecuadorian Andes, Amazonia, the desert coast of Peru, and other regions in the neotropics. They show how local peoples have changed the landscape over time to fit their needs by managing and modifying species diversity, enhancing landscape heterogeneity, and controlling ecological disturbance.
