Robespierre’s image should not be considered as a homogeneous one-piece block, as can be shown by the study of 19th-century public discourse, in particular that of political speech. So far, such discourse has not drawn the attention of historians, who have focused their research on historiography, literature and the fine arts. An examination of public discourse reveals that in the period between the Revolution and the middle of the 19th century, the black legend of Robespierre separated out into four separate legends, linked in turn to four distinct political currents: conservative/counter-revolutionary, liberal, communist and anarchist. Moreover, in the 1830s a golden legend, so far insufficiently analysed, began to emerge among the most radical republican militants.
