O caminho-de-ferro do Sul e Sueste que ligava o Barreiro a Vendas Novas, Setúbal, Évora e Beja foi um dos primeiros investimentos ferroviários realizados pelo Fontismo. Originalmente concessionado à Companhia Nacional de Caminhos de Ferro ao Sul do Tejo, em 1854, passou pelas mãos do Estado antes de ser novamente adjudicado à firma britânica, South Eastern of Portugal Railway Company, que completou as ligações até Évora e Beja em 1863 e 1864. A companhia inglesa contratou um conjunto de engenheiros britânicos para construir, manter e operar a infraestrutura. Entre estes técnicos, encontramos Charles Fitzwilliam White, que, em 1868, redigiu um prolixo relatório descrevendo a história e os detalhes de assentamento da linha (o documento encontra-se atualmente preservado na Biblioteca do Institution of Civil Engineers, em Westminster, Londres). Neste livro, transcrevemos, traduzimos e enquadramos historicamente aquela fonte histórica, que, além de evidenciar a perpetiva britânica sobre o empreendimento, revela muitos pormenores desconhecidos



sobre a construção do complexo ferroviário do Sul e Sueste (incluindo materiais usados, material fixo e circulante e desafios técnicos).
