Seit langer Zeit konkurrieren monetäre und nicht-monetäre Ursachen bei der Erklärung von Inflation. Während Milton Friedman («Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon») die erste Position vertritt, finden z.B. Paul Samuelson oder John Cochrane auch Argumente für nicht-monetäre Ursachen. Die Arbeit untersucht in Bezug auf Russland, zwischen 1992 und 2004, ob die nicht-monetären Ursachen der Inflation empirisch relevant sind. Russland ist für diese Frage insofern von besonderer Bedeutung, als es ein Paradebeispiel für das Vorkommen nicht-monetärer Inflationsursachen bietet: Die Ergebnisse der ökonometrischen Untersuchung bestätigen, dass die nicht-monetären Inflationsursachen eine wichtige Rolle in der Inflationsentwicklung spielen.
