L'exigence de débusquer la forgerie constitue l'une des missions principales incombant à l'historien du texte. Mémorables pour certaines, telle la dénonciation de la Donation de Constantin, de nombreuses révélations en la matière ont marqué l'histoire de la critique documentaire. Or, ce travail réclame d'être toujours poursuivi tant l'inventivité des faussaires est grande, les motivations diverses et les réalisations habiles. Mieux, les pièces produites, lorsque leur fausseté est avérée, présentent un intérêt renouvelé : elles engagent à étudier les motivations et les intentions qui ont présidé à leur création, les modalités de leur diffusion ou leur appropriation parfois dévastatrice.
