Spiele werden als kulturelle Formate neben Filmen, Texten u.ä. immer präsenter. Darum wird es höchste Zeit, ludologische Fragen zu stellen, die sich mit der spezifischen Ästhetik des Spiels befassen. Hierzu möchte der Band einen kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Beitrag leisten. Was zeichnet Spielpraktiken aus? Werden Spiele gespielt, oder spielen sie sich ab? Worin besteht der Zusammenhang zwischen einem Spiel (game) und dem Spielen (play) – wie also sind soziokultureller Kontext und Situativität jeweils aufeinander bezogen? Können Spiele als Modell der Gemeinschaftsbildung dienen? Seit Johan Huizingas Homo ludens werden Spiele als eigenständige kulturelle Form erforscht, wenn auch mit geringer Breitenwirkung; doch spätestens mit dem Siegeszug der digitalen Medien und der in ihnen ermöglichten Multiplikation von Spielformaten erweist sich die Erforschung nicht nur von Spiel und Spielen, sondern auch von Spielbegriffen und ihrer Nutzung als dringendes kultur- wie sozialwissenschaftliches Forschungsdesiderat, das sich auch und gerade jenseits der spezifisch auf Computerspiele fokussierenden Game Studies stellt.
