« Si Strasbourg jouit d'une réputation glorieuse entre toutes les autres villes dans la chrétienté entière, elle ne l'a pas obtenue parce qu'elle s'est déclarée jadis pour la Confession d'Augsbourg - un grand nombre d'autres cités en ont fait de même - mais elle le doit à l'hospitalité et à la protection qu'elle a accordées à ces malheureux chrétiens, sans distinction de nationalité, persécutés pour leur foi.
