Sommario/riassunto

Subject of the upcoming film Free State of Jones, this book provides recollections of the man who took on the Confederacy during the Civil War and established the liberated Mississippi county. Soldier, Father,

Rebel. Outlaw. A man of deep convictions, Captain Newt Knight disagreed with the values of the South and was accused of deserting the Confederate army. He was a believer in doing what was just. During the Civil War, he formed his own band of deserters who would rebel against the Confederacy and support the Union. In the spring of 1864, the government in Jones County was effectively overthrown, and, the county was dubbed "The Free State of Jones." Eventually, Knight would establish a mixed race town for both whites and former slaves to inhabit together. This edition merges two rare books on the subject; Thomas Jefferson Knight's The Life and Activities of Captain Newt Knight and Ethel Knight's The Echo at the Black Horn. Each paints a singular portrait of this elusive historical figure. Was he Civil War-Era Robin Hood or a manipulative cult leader? Both surely have fictitious elements determined by the authors' biases. Historian Jim Kelly provides a forward that helps examine the importance of each position on Newt Knight's role in the conflict and what his motivations truly were. Now the subject of a new feature film, the experiences of Newt Knight will be brought back to light. This highly informative book helps to explore his life and give an in-depth look at the man--through the eyes of his son and grand-niece.

Sommario/riassunto

This book examines the development of social support systems in the Modern age in the rural areas of the city-states of Northern Italy. This investigation achieves two main purposes: first, it allows researchers to understand the role occupied concretely by welfare and micro-credit activities in the political and socio-economic panorama of rural Northern Italy; secondly, it verifies to what extent the formation of a more or less structured support system influenced the establishment of local identity and the rooting of individuals. The book brings together perspectives from different fields of research ranging from economic and political history to the study of the history of ecclesiastical institutions, as well as integrating recent research on the anthropological value of welfare actions and the use of multiple historical sources. It considers how the retreat of the welfare activity of the State, associated with a depopulation of the rural areas of the peninsula and a steady increase of poverty into social fringes that were previously not affected by economic problems, pushes us to investigate more carefully the dynamics that in the Ancien Régime gave shape to the support activities against indigence and poverty. This book will be of interest to academics and students working in economic history and social history. Giovanni Gregorini is Full Professor of Economic History and head of the Department of History and Philology at Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Italy, where he teaches Economic History and Business History. Luciano Maffi is a Lecturer in Economic and Global History at the University of Parma, Italy. He also teaches Economic History at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Italy. Sommario/riassunto

This book covers all aspects of body contouring with silicone implants with the exception of breast augmentation. After a discussion of the available silicone implants and anesthetic management, the various techniques that may be used in body sculpting are carefully described in a series of chapters focusing on augmentation of the biceps, triceps, pectorals, buttocks, hip/thigh, calf, and quadriceps. Potential complications are identified for each of the procedures and clear guidance is provided on how to avoid them. The book will enable the surgeon to gain a sound understanding of the different body sculpting techniques and when they are applicable. It is intended both for students/beginners and for experienced cosmetic plastic surgeons alike.
