Noblesse et pauvreté met en évidence le paradoxe de l’existence en Bretagne d’une noblesse pauvre à l’intérieur d’un ordre privilégié et analyse l’appauvrissement des lignes cadettes, dû essentiellement au partage noble. Les activités pourtant très diverses exercées par beaucoup de petits nobles (soldats et marchands de fil, agriculteurs et notaires, officiers de juridiction et taverniers...) ne leur permirent pas d’enrayer ce phénomène. Par ailleurs, à la chute massive des nobles dans le tiers état aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles s’oppose à la fin du XVIIe et au XVIIIe siècle leur volonté vigoureuse de conserver leur statut de membre du second ordre.  Michel Nassiet propose des méthodes novatrices, notamment graphiques, qui intéresseront historiens et généalogistes. Utilisant systématiquement des généalogies descendantes, il a procédé à la reconstitution précise de douze lignages enracinés dans le triangle Rennes-Saint-Malo-Saint-Brieuc. Il étudie leurs comportements fondamentaux face à la vie : nuptialité et fécondité, et face aux changements extérieurs : prix et fiscalité.
