Adolf Busch (1891-1952) galt zu Lebzeiten als der bedeutendste deutsche Geiger, seine Interpretationen der Werke von Bach, Beethoven und Reger sind bis heute legendär. Zwischen den Weltkriegen prägte er als Solist, als Leiter des Busch-Quartetts und im Duo mit dem Pianisten Rudolf Serkin das Zürcher Musikleben. Kein auswärtiger Musiker trat so häufig in der Tonhalle auf wie er. Den Nationalsozialismus bekämpfte Busch aus voller Überzeugung und lehnte es nach 1933 ab, in Hitler-Deutschland aufzutreten. 1935 wurde er Schweizer Bürger, emigrierte 1939 in die USA und kehrte nach 1947 immer wieder in die Schweiz zurück. Werke, die im Zusammenhang mit dem Zürcher Musikleben entstanden, zeigt aber, dass er als Schöpfer eigener Musik weniger Erfolg hatte. Anhand von Korrespondenzen und Zeitungsberichten vermittelt das Buch Eindrücke von Buschs Wirkung auf die unmittelbaren Zeitgenossen, unter ihnen der Schriftsteller Thomas Mann, die Geigerin Stefi Geyer, der Zürcher Dirigent Volkmar Andreae und der Winterthurer Musikmäzen Werner Reinhart. |
