Sommario/riassunto

This groundbreaking book challenges many stereotypical views about the historical practice of prostitution. Based on twenty years' research, and organized by region, it charts the history of sex for sale in those chief centres of the late antique and medieval East, whether in Arabia, Egypt, Syria or Anatolia. Ranging extensively from 300 CE to 1500 (or from the reign of Theodosius to the early Ottoman period), Gary Leiser meticulously examines the available sources and argues for a reappraisal of the so-called oldest profession. He suggests that it was never prohibited; that there was remarkable continuity between Christian and Muslim rule; and that prostitution was institutionalized as a 'service industry' at various times. Indicating that sex work in the East had its own distinctive character and meanings (for example, that it was taxed from the time of Caligula onwards and that prostitutes were expected to retain tax receipts), the book brings continually fresh insights to a controversial subject.

"They locked the door on my meditations" : Thoreau, society, and the prison house of identity -- "Cast of characters" : problems of identity and Incidents in the life of a slave girl -- "To be entirely free, and at the same time entirely dominated by law" : the paradox of the individual in De profundis -- Positioning discourse : Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham city jail" -- Being Jane Warton : Lady Constance Lytton and the disruption of privilege -- Frustrating complicity in Breyten Breytenbach's The true confessions of an albino terrorist.

Sommario/riassunto

"Fitting Sentences is an analysis of writings by prisoners from nineteenth- and twentieth-century North America, South Africa, and Europe. Jason Haslam examines the ways in which these writers

reconfigure subjectivity and its relationship with social power structures, especially the prison itself, while also detailing the relationship between prison and slave narratives. Specifically, Haslam reads texts by Henry David Thoreau, Harriet Jacobs, Oscar Wilde, Martin Luther King, Jr, Constance Lytton, and Breyten Breytenbach to find the commonalities and divergences in their stories."--Jacket.

Broadening horizons -- A matter of proper fit -- A connected view.

Sommario/riassunto

Searching for better ways to inspire people to pursue wisdom, Frederick D. Aquino argues that teachers and researchers should focus less on state-of-the-art techniques and learning outcomes and instead pay more attention to the intellectual formation of their students. We should, Aquino contends, encourage the development of an integrative habit of mind, which entails cultivating the capacity to grasp how various pieces of data and areas of inquiry fit together and to understand how to apply this information to new situations. To fully explore this notion, An Integrative Habit of Mind brings the work of the great religious figure and educator John Henry Newman into fruitful

conversation with recent philosophical developments in epistemology, cognition, and education. Aquino unearths some crucial but neglected themes from Newman's writings and carries them forward into the contemporary context, revealing how his ideas can help us broaden our horizons, render apt judgments, and better understand our world and how we think about it.
