Sommario/riassunto

How can the story of the Grimké sisters be of interest to contemporary French readers, who are not particularly au fait with 19th century American history? Will they seem them as activists in the radical antislavery movement or pioneers for the feminist cause? The sisters’ story, including the destinations they selected or disowned, chronicles their journey, from a South mired in tradition to New England, the land of radical reform. It tells of the gestation of their own rebellion, of the hardening of their stance and of their social, religious and intellectual emancipation.  More than the vocal contribution to the public debate against slavery, their writings, never before translated into French, shed light on this evolution which, together with the anti-slavery stance, places greater emphasis on feminist arguments, the progressivism of which remains unequalled even today.
