Inside Soviet Film Satire è una vivace raccolta di sedici saggi originali di studiosi e commentatori cinematografici sovietici, americani e canadesi. È il primo approfondimento su un genere importante della tradizione cinematografica sovietica. Fin dalle origini, l'umorismo e la satira sono stati strettamente legati nel cinema sovietico. Da nessuna parte in questa tradizione esiste il puro genere comico rappresentato in Occidente nei film di Charlie Chaplin o Buster Keaton; al contrario, la commedia sovietica può essere meglio descritta come "risata con sferzata". I film realizzati durante i primi anni del regime comunista raffiguravano personaggi e situazioni in un momento in cui la promessa del socialismo doveva ancora essere realizzata.
