The 57 papers in this volume were presented at the January 2002 workshop on distributed and parallel computing. The papers report advances in performance analysis, web computing, failure handling, Java and Jini, tools for grids, unorthodox computing architectures, systems and applications, message passing, scheduling, and algorithms. Some of the topics are Beowulf performance in CFD multigrid applications, a comparison of assignment schemes for replicated services in Jini, an automatically tuned linear algebra library, a simulation environment for ad hoc networks using sector subdivision, and fast detection and resolution of generalized distributed deadlocks.
