Établi au cœur de la Provence, sur un site dont les eaux thermales furent exploitées dès l’époque gallo-romaine, le château de Gréoux-les-Bains domine de sa puissante silhouette un village qui conserve, dans son parcellaire et son architecture, les traces de son évolution au cours du Moyen-Âge et de l’Époque moderne. Sandrine Claude tente ici, par une analyse conjointe des sources d’archives, des données ponctuelles de fouilles et des vestiges monumentaux - avec une approche systématique relevant de l’archéologie du bâti - , de répondre à la problématique posée par les origines et les ambitions qui ont présidé à la réalisation d’un château démesuré par rapport à ton contexte géographique et humain. Ainsi sont retracées l’histoire - jusqu’à présent méconnue - du château, replacé dans son environnement peuplé, celle de ses commanditaires et de ses propriétaires successifs, ainsi que l’évolution architecturale de l’édifice. a site which had been used from early Roman times for its hot springs. The castle’s powerful outline dominates the village whose organisation and architecture has preserved evidence of its development from the Middle Ages to the modern period. In the present work, Sandrine Claude combines analysis of archival sources, selected excavation data and standing remains - making particular use of building archeology - to determine the origins and ambitions that presided over the building of a castle whose size is disproportionate to its geographical and human context. The castle’s little known history and its architectural development are thus retraced and the monument placed in its human environment, that of its commissioners and successive owners. |
