Nourrir une « ambition pour la Méditerranée » est une composante essentielle de la politique française depuis la fin de l'empire napoléonien. Cette politique, qui vise à former une coalition entre les divers peuples de la « mer privilégiée » (comme l'appelait Fernand Braudel), s'offre comme un contrepoids à l'influence de l'Allemagne sur l'Europe. C’est ainsi que pour tenir tête aux empires slaves et germaniques, plusieurs générations de décideurs politiques ont envisagé de créer un « Bloc latin », une « Union méditerranéenne » ou bien encore, sous un intitulé particulièrement agressif et significatif, un « Empire latin ». Le présent ouvrage traite de ces tentatives, de leurs soubassements et de leurs ressorts. Il s'attache à décrire la construction et la propagation des stéréotypes culturels nord-sud depuis le xviiie siècle jusqu’à nos jours, s’intéresse au « Système de la Méditerranée » des saint-simoniens du début xixe siècle, et s'attarde sur la période des deux guerres mondiales. Wolf Lepenies révèle dans la vieille rivalité franco-allemande des ressentiments profondément enracinés entre un Nord protestant soi-disant austère et un Sud catholique où règnerait légèreté et joie de vivre – idées reçues |
