Les historiens ont trop souvent négligé de décrire le rôle des porte-parole pendant le premier moment républicain, au profit de figures construites sur le modèle du sans-culotte parisien ou du notable jacobin de province, et jugées particulièrement aptes à l’activité commémorative. Cependant « l’écrivain patriote », « le grammairien patriote », « le missionnaire patriote », « la citoyenne patriote » et bien d’autres ont contribué de manière décisive à la formation du creuset républicain. En appui sur une synthèse non-cumulative, donc par points de vue, des travaux effectués depuis une vingtaine d’années en matière de langages révolutionnaires, l’auteur s’efforce de délimiter les caractéristiques pragmatiques d’un « pouvoir communicatif engendré communicativement » (Habermas) instauré par les porte-parole, tout en insistant sur le lien intime qui unit ces médiateurs d’un type nouveau aux législateurs. Ainsi se précise, du discours d’assemblée, spécifique de la radicalité de 1789, au discours républicain en acte, à son apogée en 1792, un trajet communicationnel où règne l’échange réciproque entre citoyens sur la base des valeurs de liberté et d’égalité. Inscrivant sa démarche dans le champ d’investigation de l’histoire sociale du discours, l’auteur s’intéresse à la pragmatique du langage en tant qu’



analyse d’actes de langage (de l’acte de demande à l’acte de souveraineté en passant par l’acte de faire parler la loi) créateurs d’événements. En fin de compte, la description de la figure multiforme du porte-parole nous fait découvrir des possibles du mouvement historique toujours d’actualité dans le temps présent.
