Blumenberg el ser humano es un ser simbólico, un ser que crea mediaciones para lidiar con la realidad o, para hacerle honor a la terminología que utiliza en Trabajo sobre el mito [1979], para lidiar con el “absolutismo de la realidad”.A lo largo de casi toda su trayectoria, Blumenberg interroga precisamente la capacidad del ser humano de dominar al entorno y de sobreponerse al componente siempre extraño, inquietante y hasta peligroso que éste guarda. Pero a diferencia de los considerandos ensayados por Thomas Hobbes (2007) en su célebre Leviatán [1651], e incluso de las posiciones de Max Weber (1972) sobre el politeísmo de los valores, la realidad no le resulta necesariamente belicosa o conflictiva a este filósofo alemán.
