|
La situation des juifs, partagés entre différentes identités nationales en formation en Europe centrale de la fin du xviiie siècle à la seconde guerre mondiale, est révélatrice des enjeux identitaires et politiques auxquels doivent faire face les minorités. La question de l’appartenance nationale se pose pour eux avec une acuité particulière, et ils apparaissent dès lors comme des individus au parcours à la fois singulier et paradigmatique. Les auteurs mettent en évidence à travers des chapitres consacrés à des personnalités emblématiques les mécanismes de la construction d’une identité personnelle dans un environnement complexe, qu’elle s’effectue dans la sphère privée ou publique, en passant par l’adhésion volontaire à une communauté, qu’elle soit culturelle ou politique. Les étapes de la construction d’identités apparaissent à travers des biographies qui s’inscrivent dans un vaste espace, depuis l’Europe centrale (Vienne, Prague, Budapest, Zagreb et Varsovie) jusqu’à Jérusalem et la Chine. Le parcours d’individualités juives permet de suivre l’émergence d’identités complexes, dans le contexte d’adoption d’autres cultures ou de réaffirmation d’un ancrage spécifiquement juif. À la fois chronologique et thématique, l’ouvrage analyse le lien entre écriture et identité, retrace la maturation de consciences politiques et met en évidence le rôle de Vienne, la grande métropole centre-européenne au cœur d’un vaste réseau d’échanges culturels. Ainsi apparaissent, sous un nouvel éclairage, des figures connues et méconnues de pédagogues, de rabbins, d’historiens, d’hommes et de femmes de lettres : Karl Kraus, Max Brod, Elias Canetti, mais aussi Veza Canetti, Klara Blum… |
