La epistemología social es un área de estudio que fue propuesta por dos bibliotecarios: Margaret Egan y Jesse Shera, en 1950. A mediados de la década de 1980, filósofos y sociólogos "redescubren" la epistemología social y empieza un desarrollo amplio de la misma en diversas vertientes teóricas. Los bibliotecarios retomaron recientemente estas aportaciones y empezaron a desarrollarse estudios de la información basados en el marco conceptual y metodológico de la epistemología social. Estos estudios se han dedicado a diversos temas y agrupan a investigadores de Estados Unidos, Europa y otros países, pero cuentan aún con muy poca difusión en el mundo de habla hispana. En este trabajo se analizan los estudios recientes en el área de la información y se sugieren las dificultades y las vías posibles de la investigación basada en la epistemología social.
