broad variety of sources, historian Marisa Chappell provides a fresh look at the national debate about poverty, welfare, and economic rights from the 1960's through the mid-1990's. In Chappell's telling, we experience the debate over welfare from multiple perspectives, including those of conservatives of several types, liberal antipoverty experts, national liberal organizations, labor, government officials, feminists of various persuasions, and poor women themselves. During the Johnson and Nixon administrations, deindustrialization, stagnating wages, and widening economic inequality pushed growing numbers of wives and mothers into the workforce. Yet labor unions, antipoverty activists, and moderate liberal groups fought to extend the fading promise of the family wage to poor African Americans families through massive federal investment in full employment and income support for male breadwinners. In doing so, however, these organizations condemned programs like Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) for supposedly discouraging marriage and breaking up families. Ironically their arguments paved the way for increasingly successful right-wing attacks on both "welfare" and the War on Poverty itself. |

Chaque année, l’Institut de recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est contemporaine (Irasec), basé à Bangkok, mobilise une vingtaine de chercheurs et d’experts pour décrypter l’actualité régionale. L’Asie du Sud-Est – véritable carrefour économique, culturel et religieux – constitue un espace unique d’articulation des diversités sur la longue durée et le demeure plus que jamais aujourd’hui. Cette collection permet de suivre au fil des ans l’évolution des grands enjeux contemporains de cette région continentale et insulaire de plus de 640 millions d’habitants et d’en comprendre les dynamiques d’intégration régionale et de connectivités avec le reste du monde. L’Asie du Sud-Est 2019 propose une analyse synthétique et détaillée des principaux événements politiques, économiques et sociaux survenus en 2018 dans chacun des onze pays de la région, complétée par un focus sur deux personnalités de l’année et une actualité en image marquante. L’ouvrage propose également des dossiers thématiques qui abordent cinq sujets traités à l’échelle régionale : les dynamiques démographiques et les formes et processus d’urbanisation des grandes villes, le modèle de développement des zones franches d’exportation, les nouvelles routes de la soie et les investissements chinois et un état des lieux sur la peine capitale en Asie-du Sud-Est. Des outils pratiques sont également disponibles, dont une fiche et une chronologie par pays et un cahier réunissant les principaux indicateurs sociaux, économiques et environnementaux, ainsi qu’une synthèse des indicateurs démographiques commentée. |
