Preface: The structural characteristics of Christian basilicas -- Part I. The ruins of the ancient Aksumite basilicas (fourth-seventh century) -- Part II. The architecture of the late-Aksumite and post-Aksumite basilicas of Tigray (eighth-twelfth century) -- The built basilicas -- The hypogeal basilicas -- The semi-monolithic basilicas -- Part III. The architecture of the medieval basilicas of Ethiopia (the twelfth-century Zagwe kingdom and the restoration of the Solomonic dynasty) -- Basilicas constructed in caves -- The monolithic and semi-monolithic basilicas in Lālibalā -- The last Ethiopian basilicas.

Sommario/riassunto

The basilica is symbolic of the history of Christianity in Ethiopia. 'Ezānā, the first Christian king of the Aksumite empire was responsible for the creation of the large, five-aisled church of Māryām Şĕyon, sadly destroyed in 1535, and since then many hundreds of basilicas have been built in Ethiopia, many, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lalibela, literally 'hewn from the rock'. In this book, architectural

historian and architect Mario di Salvo considers the unique architectural features of Ethiopia's basilicas and explains how they developed over time. Featuring almost 200 colour illustrations, this book is an attractive and comprehensive guide to some of Ethiopia's most inspiring religious buildings. --

Sommario/riassunto

This book reviews current techniques used in membrane protein structural biology, with a strong focus on practical issues. The study of membrane protein structures not only provides a basic understanding of life at the molecular level but also helps in the rational and targeted design of new drugs with reduced side effects.  Today, about 60% of the commercially available drugs target membrane proteins and it is estimated that nearly 30% of proteins encoded in the human genome are membrane proteins. In recent years much effort has been put towards innovative developments to overcome the numerous obstacles associated with the structure determination of membrane proteins. This book reviews a variety of recent techniques that are essential to any modern researcher in the field of membrane protein structural biology. The topics that are discussed are not commonly found in textbooks. The scope of this book includes: Expression screening using fluorescent proteins The use of detergents in membrane protein research The use of NMR Synchrotron developments in membrane protein structural biology Visualisation and X-ray data collection of microcrystals X-ray diffraction data analysis from multiple crystals Serial millisecond crystallography Serial femtosecond crystallography Membrane protein structures in drug discovery The information provided in this book should be of interest to anyone working in the area of structural biology. Students will find carefully prepared overviews of basic ideas and advanced protein scientists will find the level of detail required to apply the material directly to their day to day work.

Sommario/riassunto

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems, ARCS 2008, held in Dresden, Germany, in February 2008. The 19 revised full papers presented together with 2 keynote papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 submissions. The papers cover a wide spectrum reaching from pre-fabrication adaptation of architectural templates to dynamic run-time adaptation of deployed systems with special focus on adaptivity and adaptive system architectures. The papers are organized in topical sections on hardware design, pervasive computing, network processors and memory management, reconfigurable hardware, real-time architectures, organic computing, and computer architecture.
