Le donne rurali russe sono state descritte come vittime del patriarcato oppressivo, celebrate come simboli della forza femminile intrinseca ed esaltate come la fonte originaria di una grande cultura mondiale. Nel corso degli anni della collettivizzazione, dell'industrializzazione e della seconda guerra mondiale, le donne hanno svolto un ruolo importante nell'evoluzione del villaggio russo. Ma come si vedono? Cosa rivelano le loro storie, canzoni e costumi sui loro valori, desideri e motivazioni?Basato su quasi tre decenni di lavoro sul campo, dal 1983 al 2010, The Worlds of Russian Rural Women segue tre generazioni di donne russe e mostra come preservano, scartano e rielaborano alternativamente le tradizioni culturali dei loro antenati per soddisfare le mutevoli esigenze e concezioni di sé . In un importante contributo allo studio del folklore, Laura J. "Language of the Snakes traces the history of the Prakrit language as a literary phenomenon, starting from its cultivation in courts of the Deccan in the first few centuries of the common era. Although little studied today, Prakrit was an important vector of the "kavya movement," and once joined Sanskrit at the apex of classical Indian literary culture. The opposition--as well as underlying identity--between Prakrit and Sanskrit was at the center of an enduring "language order" in India, a set of ways of thinking about, naming, classifying, representing, and ultimately using languages.
