Pendant plus de trente ans, Adorno a nourri le projet d’une monographie consacrée à Beethoven, que sa disparition brutale en 1969 ne lui a pas permis d’achever. Collectés dans ses carnets et complétés par des extraits d’œuvres publiées, les fragments réunis dans ce volume permettent de cerner l’armature de cette « philosophie de la musique » inédite. Passant avec virtuosité des analyses musicales les plus fines à l’interprétation philosophique la plus audacieuse, Adorno déchiffre dans la musique de Beethoven le destin contrasté des Lumières au moment où le capitalisme prend son essor.
