Combinant des approches littéraires et civilisationnelles, cette étude fait ressortir la richesse des autobiographies écrites en anglais par des Amérindiens aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Ces textes subvertissent le discours dominant pour offrir une vision plus complexe et dynamique des sociétés autochtones dont les conditions d’existence et les modèles identitaires furent remis en question par le processus colonial. Refusant l’alternative de l’assimilation ou de la disparition, les autobiographes font entendre les voix des peuples amérindiens et proposent de s’engager sur la voie d’une coexistence basée sur l’échange et la compréhension mutuelle. Ce discours, notamment analysé sous l’angle d’une « poét(h)ique de la créolisation » et de l’« identité-rhizome » définies par Édouard Glissant, fut mis en acte par les auteurs eux-mêmes. Mais de leurs pratiques naquirent aussi des doutes : et si les possibilités de survie des Amérindiens, malgré leurs efforts d’ajustement, n’étaient tout simplement pas hypothéquées par



le comportement foncièrement hostile des puissances coloniales ?
