Le Nouveau Festin de Pierre est la dernière pièce sur Dom Juan écrite en France au XVIIe siècle, après le chef-d’oeuvre de Molière. Bien que la comparaison avec le Festin de Molière l’ait toujours discrédité, le Nouveau Festin de Rosimond est une pièce remarquable. L’auteur mélange agréablement plusieurs renvois à une tradition donjuanesque qu’il connaissait très bien, mais il élabore aussi une nouveauté : le triplement de Dom Juan, avec l’introduction de deux amis libertins – Dom Lope et Dom Felix – qui sont aussi les maîtres de débauche pour le protagoniste. Ajoutons les nouveautés scénographiques et le succès international de cette pièce, imitée par Thomas Shadwell en Angleterre, pour accroître l’intérêt de cette édition.
