Au Moyen Age, nombre de métaphores circulaient à propos de Dieu. Mais peu ont été aussi répandues et aussi décriées que l’identification de l’Etre suprême à une sphère « dont le centre est partout, la circonférence nulle part ». Ce livre suit les méandres de cette histoire au xiiie siècle telle qu’on ne l’a pas encore vue : à la fois littéraire (Jean de Meun), théologique (Alain de Lille) et scientifique (Vincent de Beauvais) ; latine et vernaculaire. Il questionne sa provenance, ses liens avec la philosophie antique et la rhétorique, ainsi que les concepts de nature et d’infini. Grâce à des analyses détaillées de textes encore mal connus, tels que les traductions et abrégés en moyen français du Speculum maius, l’ouvrage aboutit au constat d’une richesse irréductible et, en même temps, au refus de voir dans cette micro-



histoire une linéarité, voire même une progression.
