Au Moyen Age, nombre de métaphores circulaient à propos de Dieu. Mais peu ont été aussi répandues et aussi décriées que l’identification de l’Etre suprême à une sphère « dont le centre est partout, la circonférence nulle part ». Ce livre suit les méandres de cette histoire au xiiie siècle telle qu’on ne l’a pas encore vue : à la fois littéraire (Jean de Meun), théologique (Alain de Lille) et scientifique (Vincent de Beauvais) ; latine et vernaculaire. Il questionne sa provenance, ses liens avec la philosophie antique et la rhétorique, ainsi que les concepts de nature et d’infini.
