Le surveillant général est un acteur méconnu de l’enseignement secondaire français, des xixe-xxe siècles. L’analyse des représentations permet de dégager la figure unifiée du « surgé ». Dépassant ces stéréotypes, une étude historiographique et prosopographique, basée sur un important corpus d’archives et de témoignages, révèle les profils historiques nuancés du surveillant général, le cadre d’exercice, le métier au quotidien et les carrières protéiformes. La surveillance générale au prisme du genre s’ancre dans les images traditionnelles de la femme, attendues par l’institution. The “surveillant général” (general supervisor) is a key character in French schools, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In collective imagery, he appears as a strong character, firmly enforcing order and discipline in secondary schools. The research examines this myth and confronts it with historical sources. This archetype belongs to the embarrassing filiation of the ‘conseillers principaux d’éducation’ (educational counselors), created in 1970. |
