• Sommario/riassunto: The concept of Floer homology was one of the most striking developments in differential geometry. It yields rigorously defined invariants which can be viewed as homology groups of infinite-dimensional cycles. The ideas led to great advances in the areas of low-dimensional topology and symplectic geometry and are intimately related to developments in Quantum Field Theory. The first half of this book gives a thorough account of Floer's construction in the context of gauge theory over 3 and 4-dimensional manifolds. The second half works out some further technical developments of the theory, and the final chapter outlines some research developments for the future - including a discussion of the appearance of modular forms in the theory. The scope of the material in this book means that it will appeal to graduate students as well as those on the frontiers of the subject.

• Sommario/riassunto: Dans un village indien des montagnes du Chiapas, au sud-est du Mexique, se déroule, sous couvert d’un "Carnaval", un flamboyant bras de fer entre les hommes et les dieux : de la guerre à la familiarisation, de la séduction à l’agressivité, ce rituel déploie toute la gamme des émotions sociales dans un immense échange de biens et de promesses. Acteurs, forces, espaces et temps s’animent pour re-générer la Tradition, pour arracher de haute lutte aux forces ambivalentes l’assurance d’un avenir et pour "maintenir" la vie des corps et du monde ; pour que dans l’image troublée des destins humains se dessine la volonté des Mayas de vivre, jus­qu’à l’épuisement, contre les projets obscurs des entités surnaturelles en dépit de la pauvreté, de la souffrance et des sacrifices. La "guerre rouge", figure emblématique de cette lutte, condense jusqu’à l’incandescence les débris de l’Histoire – préhispanique, coloniale et moderne –, la mémoire et l’oubli, les gestes et les paroles, avec, pour héros, des hommes enceints et des femmes qui frayent avec des singes. L’expédition en forêt, l’attaque simulée du village, le banquet des animaux et des instruments de musique, la danse des princesses et des sauvages sont autant d’épisodes singuliers ici longuement décrits pour la première fois. Les conclusions s’; attachent à placer ce rituel dans le temps long, fai­sant éclater la supposée unité interprétative d’une communauté sur son propre rituel, et dévoilent dans l’intrication des croyances une véritable politique du sacré.
