A carretón y canoa presenta la obra completa de Luigi Balzan (1865-1893), naturalista y explorador italiano de ideas progresistas, formación humanística y científica y notable capacidad para la aventura. Después de cinco años en Paraguay dedicado a la enseñanza e investigación de las ciencias naturales, emprendió un fascinante y sacrificado viaje de exploración, promocionado por la Societá Geografica Italiana. Recorrió en solitario el territorio boliviano entre 1891 y 1893, adentrándose en la realidad social y sus variantes étnicas. Transportado en barco, tren, diligencia, lomo de mula, carretón y canoa, visitó ciudades, pueblos, aldeas y los inhóspitos territorios del norte y del oriente del país instruyendo sobre el medio ambiente, la geografía y sus recursos naturales. Con verdadero espíritu de servicio a la ciencia, dejó trunca su trayectoria científica al morir a los 28 años fulminado por la malaria. El epitafio que lo recuerda resume sus pasiones: En su corta vida supo señalar nuevos derroteros a los hombres y nuevas metas a la ciencia. Este volumen presenta su desafiante y conmovedora aventura por la Sudamérica de finales del siglo XIX, además de un estudio sobre la vida y obra de Balzan |
