« Musique et sentiment » est le titre donné par Charles Rosen à une série de conférences prononcées à Bloomington en 2000. L’auteur y analyse les changements stylistiques survenus dans la musique depuis l’époque baroque jusqu’à l’époque moderne, réfléchissant à la façon dont le sens musical se constitue et se transforme. Il ne s’agit pas pour lui de nommer les sentiments que la musique exprime, mais de saisir la façon dont ils imprègnent les structures musicales. La méthode de Rosen consiste à s’appuyer sur des exemples concrets pour faire prendre conscience de questions plus générales. Ainsi rend-il le lecteur sensible aux articulations qui construisent le sens musical, une leçon précieuse pour les interprètes comme pour les auditeurs. Ces conférences sont prolongées par quatre essais.
