Cette biographie concerne Georges Bonnet, homme politique français. Ministre à de nombreuses reprises, il reste dans la mémoire comme l'homme de Munich et comme un maréchaliste. A l'image de tous ceux de sa génération, son pacifisme prend ses racines dans la Grande Guerre. Bonnet a été aussi un membre important du parti radical-socialiste, formation clé de l'entre-deux-guerres. L'ouvrage révèle des aspects largement méconnus : son cursus intellectuel, son rôle sous l'Occupation, son exil en Suisse et son parcours d'après-guerre, une renaissance due à l'ancrage dans le Périgord natal. Si l'on pensait connaître l'action du ministre au Quai d'Orsay, on connaît moins l'élu ; c'est cet « animal politique » que nous montre l'auteur avec rigueur. Ce dernier a eu accès non seulement aux archives publiques en France et à l'étranger mais aussi, ce qui est plus remarquable, à l'intégralitédes archives de la famille Bonnet (documents originaux, manuscrits, notes, journal, agendas, etc.) ainsi qu'aux archives de nombreux organismes privés dont le Crédit lyonnais, l'Ordre des avocats. Privilégiant la démarche scientifique de l'historien, Jacques Puyaubert renouvelle profondément la vision stéréotypée d'un Bonnet opportuniste et défaitiste. Sans rien esquiver des questions controversées, il fait émerger une personnalité complexe, un homme dont toute la volonté fut tendue vers un seul but « la Paix », ce terme étant synonyme pour lui de consensus et d'union nationale. |
