La Guía etnográfica de la alta amazonia es un proyecto editorial de largo aliento que se propone publicar monografías etnográficas, ensayos comparativos y trabajos de arqueología referentes a diversas zonas de Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia. El proyecto contempla la publicación de 15 volúmenes y la participación de más de 50 destacados especialistas de América Latina, Europa y los Estados Unidos.  El presente volumen reúne monografías sobre tres pueblos indígenas - los Mayo-runa, Yaminahua y Uni - pertenecientes a la familia linguística pano, y distribuidos, los dos primeros, a ambos lados de la frontera peruano-brasilera y el último al oeste del río Ucayali (Perú). Un segundo denominador común es el hecho de que todos ellos habitan áreas interfluviales o de terra firme y que aunque no pertenecen a una misma área histórico-geográfico-cultural, comparten una serie de rasgos que los distinguen de otros pueblos de habla pano localizados en zonas fluviales, tales como los Shipibo-Conibo. Entre los fenómenos analizados en estas monografías destacan los procesos de faccionalismo interno y de constante fisión social que caracterizan a estos pueblos y que explican la fluidez y el carácter tanto fragmentario cuanto efímero de sus "fronteras" étnicas.  La historia del conjunto de pueblos denominados colectivamente en la era colonial bajo el término Mayoruna, de las interrelaciones entre los Yaminahua y los otros grupos paño del alto Yurúa y Purús, y de los conflictos de los Uni con



sus vecinos pano ribereños, ilustran de manera excepcional los procesos de metamorfosis social e identitaria tan característicos de los pueblos indígenas de la región amazónica.
