La Guía etnográfica de la alta amazonia es un proyecto editorial de largo aliento que se propone publicar monografías etnográficas, ensayos comparativos y trabajos de arqueología referentes a diversas zonas y pueblos indígenas de las regiones amazónicas de Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador y Colombia. El proyecto contempla la publicación de 15 volúmenes y la participación de más de 50 destacados especialistas de América Latina, Europa y los Estados Unidos. El presente volumen reúne monografías sobre tres pueblos indígenas de la amazonia peruana -los Cashinahua, Amahuaca y Shipibo-Conibo- pertenecientes a la familia lingüística pano. Los dos primeros son pueblos interfluviales localizados, el primero, en las cabeceras de los afluentes orientales del río Ucayali y, el segundo, en las nacientes de los ríos Yurúa y Purús. Los Shipibo-Conibo habitan ambas orillas del medio y alto Ucayali, constituyendo uno de los pocos pueblos indígenas ribereños que aún existen en el Perú. Junto con las monografías sobre otros tres pueblos pano-hablantes -los Mayoruna, Uni y Yaminahua- publicadas en el volumen anterior, estos trabajos ofrecen una rica visión de los pueblos del conjunto macro-pano.
