La pensée politique française contemporaine tend à la démocratie un miroir révélateur des grands enjeux qui la traversent. À la différence de la pensée anglo-saxonne qui voit surtout en elle une donnée aboutie dont il faut dégager les règles de justice, la pensée française s'est interrogée sur les conditions de possibilité même de la démocratie, l'envisageant comme régime dont l'horizon est l'autonomie de l'individu |

et du collectif. Cependant, si plusieurs auteurs français ont insisté sur la démocratie comme institution, d'autres lui ont assigné une dimension critique qui la rend irréductible à tout pouvoir ou toute philosophie qui prétendraient la réaliser. C'est cette tension, cette dialectique de l'institué et de l'instituant qu'examine le présent ouvrage, dans une enquête libre que des chercheurs du Québec et de la France ont menée en faisant dialoguer la philosophie politique avec l'histoire et les sciences sociales. Dans ce panorama apparaissent les figures de Miguel Abensour, Cornelius Castoriadis, Claude Lefort, Marcel Gauchet, Pierre Manent, Jacques Rancière et d'autres encore, dont les œuvres sont confrontées à celles, classiques ou modernes, de Platon, Kant, Nietzsche ou Tocqueville, ou sollicitées pour comprendre la place du droit, du langage, de l'éducation et des sentiments moraux en démocratie. Elles sont aussi mobilisées pour éclairer ce que la recherche de l'autonomie, de la vérité, de l'expansion impériale, et de la conciliation de l'Un et du multiple en démocratie peut vouloir dire. |
