À l’école primaire de la fin du xixe siècle, les performances des filles en mathématiques sont inférieures à celles des garçons. Sont-elles privées de « la bosse des maths » ou y a-t-il d’autres raisons à cette situation ? L’enseignement mathématique, tel qu’il est défini par les nouveaux programmes publiés à partir de 1881, se veut pratique et cherche également à développer la réflexion. Ces finalités ont-elles été atteintes et dans quelle mesure ont-elles permis d’améliorer les résultats des filles ? Cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de l’enseignement mathématique féminin au primaire par le biais de sa mise en œuvre dans la Somme. L’auteure s’attache à entrer non seulement dans les classes, mais aussi dans les salles d’examen, pour saisir les enjeux de cet enseignement, les décalages entre le national et le local, précisant ainsi la culture scolaire acquise par ces élèves.
