À la Renaissance, une foule de statues et de reliefs d'une exceptionnelle qualité, de toutes tailles et de tous matériaux, envahit les églises de la Champagne méridionale. Une population, désireuse de mettre en image son statut social et sa piété durement éprouvée par les guerres de Religion, confia à ses sculpteurs la mission de continuer à peupler leurs églises de retables et de statues. Les artistes étaient prêts à répondre à cette demande pressante de façon neuve et inventive. Certains d'entre eux avaient aiguisé leurs talents dans les grands chantiers voisins contemporains, tout particulièrement celui du château de Fontainebleau, œuvrant aux côtés d'artistes de premier plan, tel Dominique Florentin. Ce sculpteur italien installé à Troyes au début des années 1540 a joué un rôle majeur dans le renouveau du foyer artistique champenois.
