The study of moderates in French politics, and more specifically, the influence of moderate Christians, has long been a blind spot in French historiography. In an effort to fill this void, historians have contributed to this book, as a result of a conference held in Lille in 2005 and 2006, and which can be summarized with three essential results. First result: the contribution of eminent historians, specialists in European countries in which the relationship between political philosophy and theology has not been subject to the same reservations as in France, has helped to better define the singularity of French historiography. Second result: historians, specialists in the turbulent relations between the Church and the Republic, confirmed the often decisive role of these moderate Catholics in the establishment and stabilization of the Republican regime. They also highlighted their contributions in rebuilding the Republic in the aftermath of Liberation. Third result: how the option of a specifically religious, philosophical, and theological order, and the choice in political order are linked together. |

regimes in Eastern Europe. The events of 1989 are widely seen as having ushered in new all-encompassing reforms in almost all areas of life. In few other places were reforms more contested and divisive than in Romania, a country that suffered greatly under the sultanistic-cum-totalitarian dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu, faced the region's only bloody anti-communist revolt, and as such had the longest to travel on the road from communism to democracy. We now have a generation's worth of experience with these wrenching reforms tha |
