« Contre le poison de l’Afrique, il n’y a qu’un remède… Vichy. » Ainsi se prononçait une publicité pour la station thermale de l’Allier en 1924. Ce livre s’appuie sur des archives sur quatre continents pour retracer le lien étroit, pourtant resté largement oublié jusqu’ici, entre colonisation française et thermalisme. En effet, dès le XIXe siècle, sinon avant, le thermalisme est apparu en France comme un moyen d’enrayer les taux de mortalité élevés dans les pays chauds, mais aussi de « ressourcer » les coloniaux, soit par des cures thermales dans des Vichys malgaches, réunionnais, antillais, tunisiens etc., soit en rapatriant les coloniaux vers des villes d’eaux métropolitaines. Cela entraîna un impressionnant système de rapatriements, de permissions, et de congés sanitaires. L’ouvrage conjugue l’histoire de la médecine, des pratiques coloniales, des mentalités, des sciences et de l’administration, et s’intéresse à plusieurs cas d’études : la Guadeloupe (Dolé-les-Bains, la Ravine chaude, notamment), la Réunion (Cilaos, Salazie), Madagascar (Antsirabe), la Tunisie (Korbous), ainsi que trois stations métropolitaines : Vals-les-Bains, Encausse-les-Thermes et Vichy.
