Sand et Flaubert, deux écrivains que tout sépare… En effet, en cette



deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle qui assiste au déclin de la rhétorique classique, et qui, par réaction au subjectivisme débridé (initié par Rousseau), se fait le « policier » de la langue, Sand et Flaubert n´ont ni les mêmes rapports au monde ni les mêmes projets artistiques. Pourtant, tous deux se sont livrés, au fil des années, à une correspondance régulière et pressante à travers laquelle ils testent diverses stratégies, et que les outils de la pragmatique mettent particulièrement en évidence.  L’un et l’autre lecteurs de Platon, pour qui le véritable dialogue va de soi à soi, Sand et Flaubert surchargent leurs lettres de méta-discours légitimant (et contre-légitimant) dans un mouvement qui se veut à la fois extérieur et intérieur, objectif et subjectif.  Journaliste de son état, convaincue de l’utilité de l´écriture et de la lecture, Sand va dans le sens de la doxa en légitimant le lien entre discours social et discours littéraire. Flaubert, lui, qui s’abstient de participer au débat public, transforme la Correspondance en un espace de réflexions. Les deux écrivains trouvent toutefois dans l’échange épistolier un moyen pour dire, et en même temps, résorber leurs contradictions.
