L’objectif de cet ouvrage est d’approfondir la réflexion sur l’écriture et son évaluation de l’école élémentaire au lycée. Les auteurs abordent plusieurs questions et étudient, pour y répondre, des dispositifs variés, des publics contrastés, des contextes scolaires divers. Quelles ont été et quelles sont les entrées privilégiées et les points aveugles dans les pratiques d’évaluation ? Comment analyser, en recherche, en formation ou en classe, les écrits des élèves ? Comment concevoir des situations d’enseignement qui permettent aux élèves de construire les compétences scripturales attendues ?  Au travers d’orientations méthodologiques et théoriques différentes et complémentaires, les travaux de recherche présentés invitent à considérer plusieurs dimensions ou facettes de l’activité scripturale : culturelle, linguistique, métalinguistique, dialogique, temporelle… Au final, cet ouvrage, ancré dans l’observation du terrain et étudiant de façon plurielle l’écriture à l’école, contribue à renouveler la réflexion didactique engagée depuis les années 1980-1990 par nombre de didacticiens ou d’auteurs situés à l’interface entre la didactique et des disciplines contributoires.
