S’appuyant sur trois décennies de travaux de terrain et de recherches bibliographiques en Côte-d’Or, l’ouvrage que publie aujourd’hui la R.A.E. reprend une thèse de doctorat soutenue en 1993 à l’Université de Franche-Comté par Jean-Pierre Nicolardot, chercheur au C.N.R.S. Après l’historique et la définition de l’habitat fortifié aux temps préhistoriques et protohistoriques, l’auteur présente les résultats de ses recherches stratigraphiques sur deux sites clefs de la Côte-d’Or pour l’étude des premières architectures défensives, le Camp de Myard à Vitteaux, entre les vallées de l’Armançon et de la Brenne, et le Châtelet d’Étaules, dans la vallée du Suzon. Ces deux sites ont été occupés plus particulièrement au Néolithique moyen et au Bronze final, ainsi que, pour le second, au premier Âge du Fer. Dépassant le cadre de ces deux gisements bourguignons, le lecteur trouvera une abondante matière comparative de sites témoins des activités ou de la présence humaine en Côte-d’Or, depuis la fin de la Préhistoire jusqu’aux Âges des Métaux (habitats ouverts, nécropoles, dépôts et objets isolés remarquables…).
