Ford Madox Ford occupa une place majeure mais paradoxale au sein du modernisme. Les résistances à inscrire Ford dans le canon moderniste peuvent s’expliquer par la difficulté à réconcilier les contradictions de son œuvre et à en dégager un système esthétique stable. L’ambivalence se retrouve au cœur de sa tétralogie Parade’s End. La dialectique est irréconciliable entre la chimère d’un passé venant habiter le présent et la rupture dont cette chimère est le symptôme. Ce travail explore la tension entre hommage et dérision qui caractérise Parade’s End. La nostalgie d’une idéologie stable, d’un récit satisfaisant les attentes du lecteur et d’un sujet unifié est simultanément sublimée et tournée en dérision. Le texte témoigne d’une réticence à dénouer les apories qu’il génère. Cette mise en crise ne débouche donc pas sur l’élaboration d’un système alternatif ; elle ne débouche pourtant pas sur du vide, mais sur un système dont nous devinons les contours. Le texte est en perpétuel mouvement vers une esthétique qu’il suggère en creux. La dimension fondamentale de négativité imprime au texte un paradoxal dynamisme. |
